Let me start by saying my family loves the other Wild Planet ‘Wild Albacore Tuna” products (Minimal Mercury no salt 6 oz cans and Low Mercury no salt 5 oz pop top cans). We love the same above mentioned cans with salt as well, we just prefer to add our own “Sea Salt” or “Kosher Salt” to taste. I give/gave them all 5 stars.

The “smoked” smell and color of this tuna is so appealing and wonderful, but the salty taste is overpowering to the point of being inedible (and, I’m not opposed to salt in my food). My whole family had the same opinion (three children 14, 12, 10 and my wife, who is ageless).

The 6 oz can contains 1620 mg of sodium or 540 mg of sodium per 2 oz recommended serving. Our family much prefers the less salty Island Trollers Alder Smoked, St. Jude or High Seas Smoked Albacore Tuna.

Amazon refunded the cost of the tuna. Thank you Amazon! Just one of the reasons I shop here.

My wife and I are huge fans of smoked tuna. For years we’ve been buying the Portlock Smoked tuna, and it’s very good indeed. But when we needed some in a hurry we turned to Amazon and this tuna was the only one we could get within a couple of days so we tried it out.

It’s definitely the match of the Portlock product, and in some ways may be slightly better. We haven’t yet tasted all three cans (and our experience with the Portlock tuna is that quality and taste can vary widely with each can) but so far the taste is cleaner and just as “tasty” as the Portlock stuff.

Price is the same, unless you buy direct from Portlock and order a case (with shipping it breaks more or less even, though). And for anyone who hasn’t tried smoked tuna — well, you owe it to yourself to at least try it. It’s not tuna tasting, it’s not smoked salmon, it’s a completely different taste sensation, and very very good in a number of ways. Too expensive (and probably not very good for you) to eat every day, it’s something nice to have on hand for that special occasion (open up a bottle of Riondo Prosecco, slice yourself some cheddar cheese and crackers, and throw in the smoked tuna and you have yourself a nice little feast that will make you feel on top of the world!)

If you like smoked fish, then you must try this product. But do it with the understanding that you will be hooked yourself…
